AT BREAKFAST THAT MORNING, everyone was rather subdued. Lord Evers addressed his friends. âI want to discuss your findings so far on the assignments I gave you. I also want your inputs into the question of captains. I have too many captains. I have to do something about that, maybe promote someone. We will meet here after morning training. Carlos, are you ready to set up yet?â
Carlos looked up from his food. âAre you sure you donât want to set up in the compound's offices? It makes sense to be where your men are. A commander should be with his soldiers.â
âNo, my friend. The compound is only two blocks away, practically next door. Setting up here gives us more flexibility. Besides, I am lord above commander. My duty is to the people overall.â
âI want the parlor, then. None of the other rooms is large enough, and we donât really need two sitting rooms.â
âWe donât need one sitting room,â piped Gabby, punctuating her words with her fork. âWe tend to congregate at the dining table even when we are not eating or drinking.â
âTrue,â agreed Carlos. âI would like a few shelves installed for maps and ledgers.â
âFine,â agreed his lord. âCall in a carpenter and tell him what you want. Do it today.â
âBecca, can you do that? Get us a carpenter?â asked Carlos.
âRight after breakfast, sir. I know just the one.â
âBecca?â called Gabby. âIs there someone in the village who breeds dogs? German Shepherds, specifically.â
âWhy would you be wanting to know that, Miss Gabby?â Flora swept in, instantly suspicious.
âBecause we want dogs,â replied the haughty blonde in a superior voice that brooked no arguments. âGuard dogs. I sleep with windows wide open in the summer, and anyone can get in the house. I donât like the thought of waking up with Susanna's friend standing over me.â
âThat is true. Guard dogs would be a great idea,â agreed Becca, coming to stand by Flora. âI will ask Jimmy Taylor. His son has raised dogs since he was a little boy. He loves dogs, always did. Do you want them full grown and already trained to guard? How many? You may have to wait, you know.â
âOf course, not full grown. We want puppies, one for each of us. We want to name them ourselves, train them as our own personal guards, and trust them to be devoted to us.â
âThat will take much time and effort, and you are all so busy already,â Becca cautioned.
âWhat good will puppies do if that killer you are fearing shows up at your bedside?â Flora was always one to speak her mind. The rule of biting her tongue when addressing her superiors went right over her head. Will wondered what she had taught at school. âWhat will a puppy do? Piss on his shoes? Jeez, you can do that just out of fear yourself.â
âOf course, I know that.â Gabby had her âI am not that stupidâ look on again. She seemed to wear that look often when Flora was around. âI donât intend for puppies to guard against him.
